NIF

NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is the unique 9-digit tax ID issued by the AT to every taxpayer — individual or company — in Portugal. It must appear on all invoices, tax returns, and contracts. For companies it is also called NIPC (Número de Identificação de Pessoa Colectiva).

What it means

Every invoice issued or received in Portugal must carry the NIF of both issuer and recipient. Without a valid NIF on a purchase receipt, the corresponding IVA cannot be deducted. Faturium's OCR engine extracts and validates NIFs from receipts, flagging any document that lacks a valid checksum.

NIF checksum validation

The last digit of a NIF is a check digit computed using a weighted modulo-11 algorithm defined by AT. Faturium validates every NIF extracted from documents before reconciliation.

Practical implications

Faturium surfaces any receipt where the vendor NIF is missing or invalid, so you can request a corrected invoice before the VAT return deadline.
